This is probably the question we get asked most after “how much will it cost” — is it worth fixing my garage door, or should I just replace it? There’s no single right answer, but there are a few things worth actually weighing instead of guessing.
Age is the first thing to look at. A well-maintained garage door can last 20-30 years, but the individual parts don’t all age at the same rate. If the door panel itself is solid but the opener, springs, and hardware are all original from when the house was built, you might be looking at a series of repairs that add up to more than a new door would’ve cost in the first place.
Cost is the obvious factor, but it’s worth thinking about it as cost-per-fix, not just the number on one repair. A single spring replacement is a reasonable repair on an otherwise good door. But if you’ve called us three times in two years for three different problems on the same door, that pattern is usually telling you something a single repair bill doesn’t.
Damage matters more than most people think. A dented panel is often fine to patch or replace individually. But a door that’s warped, rotted, or has taken real structural damage — think a car backing into it, or years of water damage on a wood door — usually isn’t a good repair candidate no matter how healthy the rest of the system is.
There’s also a curb appeal and value side to this that’s easy to overlook. A garage door takes up a big visual portion of the front of most houses, and an outdated or visibly worn door can drag down how the whole house reads, even if it’s mechanically fine. Garage door replacement is also one of the higher-return home improvements when it comes time to sell— it’s not just a cosmetic upgrade.
If you’re not sure which side of this your door falls on, that’s exactly the kind of thing we can tell you honestly in a few minutes on-site — we’re not going to push a replacement on a door that’s actually fine, and we’re not going to keep patching something that’s not worth it anymore. Check out our Garage Door Repair page if you think it’s fixable, or our Garage Door Installation page to see what a new door looks like.
We handle both repairs and full replacements throughout the North Shore, including Park Ridge, Northfield, Prospect Heights, and Rolling Meadows.
